However, few empirical data are available, and comparing results is complicated by confounding variation in the system and the type of mutations used. Epistasis is a Greek word that means standing over .Bateson used it to describe the masking effect in 1909. An interaction between a pair of loci in which the phenotype effect of one locus depends on the genotype at the second locus. We note, however, that our test for epistasis examines overall interactions among the Obp50 paralogs.

One important reason for this is that the outcome of a mutation can depend on the genetic context in which it occurs. This dependency is known as epistasis.

Epistasis biology

Epistasis is a term used in the field of genetics and is defined as an occurrence where one gene or more somehow changes or “masks” the expression of another gene. In these cases, the gene whose traits are not expressed is called a “hypostatic” gene, while the other genes whose traits have surfaced are called “epistatic” genes.

Homozygous recessive expression of the W gene (ww) coupled with homozygous dominant or heterozygous expression of the Y gene (YY or Yy) generates yellow fruit, and the wwyy genotype produces green fruit. However, if a dominant copy of the W gene is present (a) Dominant epistasis (12: 3: 1): When dominant allele ‘A’ masks the expression of ‘B’ ‘A’ is epistatic … An alternative perspective on epistasis is that multiple loci may underlie the expression of a single phenotype. The result is that changes to any one underlying locus can have a relatively large and even qualitative impact on the overall phenotype of an organism. T. Schwander, in Encyclopedia of Evolutionary Biology, 2016.
